CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

A Trail of Bad Luck

Sunday is all about finishing homework and finalizing plans.

I check my phone before coming downstairs. I know Jeffrey’s still in Bethesda, Maryland, for a soccer tournament with his travel team. I’ve texted him a few times, but so far, he hasn’t responded at all. It has me groaning about the mistake on the bus and again about getting caught following Patrick to class. I thought it wouldn’t be a big deal, but I guess without an explanation, Jeffrey’s left to his own imagination about what’s going on. I’ll have to wait until the bus stop on Monday to make things right. I just hope I can make it right.

That morning, Mary and I both notice that the pace of the hourglass has slowed. It’s just one grain every few hours or so. She thinks that’s a good sign. The probabilities are factoring in our meeting with Skyler—and a successful rendezvous has increased our chances of stopping the doomsday. But the end of the weekend means that Mary’s forced to pack up and hit the road. I apologize about how much homework she probably has piled up for Monday, but she says she’s finished it all. Of course. My cousin never misses a step. I thank her with the biggest hug I can manage. She pulls me in close before getting in the car.

“Hey. Keep me updated. I’m two hours away. All it would take is a quick car ride. I ran all the probabilities again last night. It’s hard to see much because you and Skyler are such wild cards, but the chance our plan works goes up a lot if Skyler gives this next step her all. Remind her that no boy is worth creating a doomsday. She has to put everything she can into the counterspell. Got it?”

I nod as she climbs into the front seat of her car.

“I’ll text you. Promise.”

“Don’t forget to sleep. A well-rested seer…”

“… is a seer who can see all that there is to see,” I finish. It was one of Grammy’s favorite sayings. “Thanks, Mary. I couldn’t have done this without you.”

“I bet you could have. You’re amazing, Celia. Keep up the good work. Keep me posted.”

She offers me a final wink, starts her car, and pulls off down the road. I watch until the brake lights vanish around a corner. Deep breaths. I take one after the next and remind myself that just because she’s leaving doesn’t mean I’m alone.

Mary’s advice—her entire plan—is with me. Grammy’s advice is always there too. That’s the best part about family. You’re never alone, not if you’ve taken the time to tuck them away in your head and your heart. Mary’s visit reminded me of that. That space in my heart? Grammy’s not gone from it. She’s still there. Still smiling and whispering and encouraging.

I just have to be patient enough to keep listening.
